Within the olive sector ASSAM is responsible for:
- Characterisation and enhancement of the olive local heritage. Since 1994, with the scientific support of CRA (The Agricultural Research Council)– Oliveculture, Spoleto branch office, experimental and variety comparison fields, as well as a multiplication field for genetic conservation have been implanted for the genetic and phytosanitary certification of the nursery material within the ASSAM experimental farm of Carassi (AP). Several genotypes were analysed from cross-breeding programmes. The native olive tree varieties and their resulting characterized olive oils, have been described, from an analytical as well as from a sensory point of view. Genotypes from hybrids have been assessed,, “Morganti”selection. In case of frost or severe attacks of the olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae), the tolerance and sensitiveness to cold and to the fly are evaluated. Monovarietal olive oils native varieties of the Marche Region are yearly produced with experimental and dissemination purposes.
- Restoration and conservation of the olive germplasm of the Marche Region: at the genetic conservation field of Carassai (AP) 23 native olive varieties are grown and preserved. They are enrolled in the Regional Biodiversity Register (Regional Law n° 12 of 3/06/2003), together with some genotypes found in the Region, resulting genetically similar to some registered native varieties and/or of any farmers’ interest for agronomic or productive reasons.
- Support to olive growers: in the phytosanitary protection and detection of the optimal harvest period by means of the agrometeorological newsletter; advice on new olive groves implantation; Olive trees production at the nursery of Pollenza; Each year vocational and advanced refresher courses on olive pruning as well as on olive oil tasting are organised. The regional list of authorized olive pruners is yearly updated. Within the project ASSAM is also responsible for the variety recognition and oil chemical and sensory analysis.
- Regional and National dissemination:
- The Regional Contest and the National Championship of Olive polyconic vase pruning “FORBICI D’ORO”.
- National Review of monovarietal olive oils.

Catalogue "Olive tree variety in the Marche Region"
The Catalogue was edited in 2001 by Pannelli Giorgio, Alfei Barbara, Santinelli Alfio and describes the morfological and agronomical features and characteristics of the native olive oil varieties of the Marche Region.
The varieties sheets have been later added in the publication: ”The agricultural Biodiversity in the Marche Region”.
