Grapevine flavescence dorée phytoplasma is a disease belonging to the group “Grapevine Yellows”. Its name derives from the color of the leaves of the white grapes turning yellow when infected.
The causal agent is the phytoplasma (a prokaryote single-cell microorganism), belonging to the taxonomic group Elm Yellow. The phytoplasma settles in the phloem plant tissue, it seals off the elaborated sap and unbalances the plants’ physiological activities. Because of its infective and the epidemic nature, the Grapevine flavescence dorée phytoplasma severely treats the wine growing as well as the vine-nursery sector.
Among the “Grapevine Yellows” there is also the black wood of grapevine, a phytoplasma disease associated with the Stolbur), presenting the same symptoms as the Grapevine flavescence dorée, but with a possible lower epidermal infection development.
The Grapewine flavescence dorée phytoplasma is a severe disease under plant mandatory control.
