The Red Palm Weevil,Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (olivier)
Il R. ferrugineus, is a weevil beetle from Southern Asia largely widespread in South Eastern Asia, Northern Africa and Europe. It was observed in the Italian Regions of Tuscany, Sicily, Campania, Lazio, Apulia, Liguria, Abruzzo and Sardinia In September 2007 the first exemplars were caught in the Marche Region.
It particularly affected the species of Phoenix canariensis and P. dactylifera. Due to its high aggressiveness, in the event of palms with suspected symptoms, the Region Plant Protecion Service (Marche RPPS) has to be informed immediately.
