Pilot Project for the Management of a Strait of the River Musone and for the Debris Energy Valorization
The current land use and the poor maintenance of riverways led to periodic crisis worsened by always more irregular seasons.
The consequent plant overgrowing is compounded by the lack of a constant and steady maintenance which, riverside owners used to provide for in the past.
What once used to be a riverside landowners’ resource has turned into an expensive problem for those authorities in charge of maintaining the river environmental and hydraulic functions.
OUTCOME
The project was financed by the Marche Rural Development Program (RDP 2007-2013) and coordinated by ASSAM as leader of a consortium which included also two farms: Savoretti Massimiliano Farm located in Castelfidardo and “Undicesima ora” social cooperative located in Senigallia.
The project proposes to combine the river plants management with the potential increased incomes of agriculture enterprises by enhancing the multifunctional energy of the resulting biomass.
The project objective is to identify strategies to:
• Improve the rivers’ drain off capacity of the increased rainfalls due to climate changes;
• Create a “farm to table” agro energetic chain, based on renewable energy sources, economically and envorimental sustainable and fostering the farm income;
• Raise the community awareness on the needed replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources.
Activities are carried out by a multi-professional network so to face the critical issues of the proposed agro-energetic chain and identify, from a technical and organizational point of view, the most efficient solutions.
Different competences of the Universities of Camerino, Siena, Marche Polytechnic University (Ancona) and of the limited liability company ErgoConsulting of Bologna are also engaged in the project.
Summing up the project aims at restoring a situation which, up to some decades ago, used to be ordinary as farmers policed the environment including rivers.
CONCLUSIONS
The past river management is not longer feasible due to the human impact on rivers, the climate changes, the rainfall concentration and the changed socio economic model of rural areas, so to require different stakeholders' cooperation of: from provincial institutions up to energy end-users, including the agriculture enterprises which is an asset to turn a cost into a resource for the whole community.
