Fire blight Erwinia amylovora (Burrill) Wilson et. Al.
Fire blight is the most harmful disease affecting the Rosacee Pomoidee. Among the hostplants of the causal pathogen, named Erwinia amylovora, are150 species split in 37 genera: Malus (apple tree), Pyrus (pear tree), Crataegus (hawthorn) have the most relevant economic impact. Others are Amelanchier (shadbush), Chaenomeles (Japanese quince), Cotoneaster (hedge cotoneaster), Cydonia (Quince), Mespilus (medlar), Pyracanta (firethorn), Sorbus (rowan) and Stransvesia/Photinia (photinia).
In the Marche Region the most affected hostplant is the hawthorn (Crataegus spp.), as far as the wild vegetation is concerned. It plays an important epidemiological role, as it is often a source of infections and propagations damaging green and fruit growing areas.
The symptoms of Erwinia amylovora are twig blights and fast desiccations which darken flowers, fruits and young buds. Advanced infection on the wood organs develop cracks which can eventually lead to plant death.
Due to this pest’s high virulence and the impact on the environment and on the agriculture production of the pathology, a ministerial decree on compulsory fight (DM n.356 of 10/09/1999) throughout the territory of the Italian Republic was issued.
The compulsory notification of each suspected Fire blight case, required by the DM, allows the early detection of the infection outbreaks and to take prompt measures against the spread.
