Chestnut gall wasp
Dryocosmus Kuriphilus Yasumatsu is a hymenopteran of the Cynipidae family accidently introduced in Europe in 2002. Since 2009 it was observed In the Marche Region in the provinces of Pesaro Urbino and of Ascoli Piceno.
Exclusively the genus Castanea is attacked by the insect which was reported both on the wild and grafted Castanea Sativa as well as on Euro-Japanese hybrids.
Adults look like little wasps, 2,0 – 2,5 mm long with black thorax and abdomen and yellow brownish limbs. Larvae are limbless, initially transparent. Once mature they turn white reaching 2,5 mm in length, once fully grown up. Pupae are initially white, becoming dark brown or dark at mature age.
